Back to Roots – How One Man Planted Hope in Punjab

Back to Roots – How One Man Planted Hope in Punjab

From UK to Punjab – A Heart That Never Left Home

In a world driven by material inheritance, Sardar Sukhdev Singh Ji, an NRI from Coventry, UK, chose legacy over land. Though miles away from the dusty fields of Punjab, his soul remained rooted in his birthplace.

Land of Love, Not Just Property

After decades of labor abroad, Sukhdev Singh Ji and his family were faced with a familiar dilemma—what to do with ancestral land in Punjab? For many, land is passed down or sold. For him, it was a mission of transformation.

He didn’t just see land.
He saw opportunity.
He saw school buildings.
He saw a better tomorrow for rural children.

A Gift That Built Futures

Driven by humility and service, Sukhdev Singh Ji donated his ancestral land for educational development—a selfless act that sparked significant change through The Kalgidhar Trust’s Akal Academies.

Here’s how his generosity made an impact:

  • Akal Academy Boparai Kalan: 2 new classroom spans + bathrooms
  • Akal Academy Khichipur: 2 classroom spans + corridor
  • Akal Academy Kakra Kalan: 4 new classroom spans
  • Bilga, Dhanal Kalan & Ghugg: Construction of ramps for accessibility
  • Akal Academy Ghugg: Parapet, tiled terrace, and mumty (roof cover)

Each of these projects now serves as a beacon of hope, helping hundreds of rural students access quality education.

A Legacy Rooted in Values

These are not just school buildings.
They are symbols of compassion, spaces of learning, and safe sanctuaries for children with dreams that once had no direction.

In a time when many forget their roots, Sukhdev Singh Ji chose to water his—ensuring they grow into trees of knowledge and empowerment for the next generation.

An Inspiration for Serving Punjab, Even From Afar

His story reminds us: “You don’t have to be in Punjab to serve Punjab. You just have to carry it in your heart.”
