Chal Seva Kariye: The Story of Selfless Service in Sikhism

“Grandpa, can you tell me a story about how people can make a difference in the world?” Nini asked with curiosity sparkling in her eyes.

“Of course, Nini,” her grandfather replied, smiling. “Let me tell you a story about a special group of students and their journey to understand and spread the true meaning of selfless service.”

The Heart of Selfless Service

“Once upon a time,” Grandpa began, “there was a beautiful song that echoed through the hallways of the Westborough Gurdwara in Massachusetts, USA. The song had a powerful message: ‘Seva Nu Lagda Meva, Chal Seva Kariye,’ which means ‘Selfless service reaps fruition, so let’s perform selfless service.’ This song, based on the core Sikh principle of ‘Sarbat da Bhalla’ or the common good of all, was much more than just music; it was a call to action.”

Sikh Study Circle and Film Education

“At the New England Sikh Study Circle Gurdwara,” Grandpa continued, “a special group of kids at the Khalsa school was learning about Sikh history and culture through filmmaking. The film club, called Film Neev, was founded by Harbaldeep Singh. He wanted to use movies and music to teach young people about Sikh values and combat misunderstandings about their faith. This year, 28 kids joined the film program. They wrote and directed five short films on important topics like hate crimes, bullying, and, of course, selfless service.”

The Message of Seva

“The students worked hard on a film called ‘Chal Seva Kariye: Let’s Do Selfless Service,'” Grandpa said. “This film had a special music video that became its title song. The film and the music video together celebrated the idea of Seva, which means helping others without expecting anything in return. The team wanted to show how important it is to help those in need, and they used their creativity to bring this message to life.”

The Film’s Storyline

“In the film,” Grandpa explained, “a group of Khalsa school students faced a challenge. A hurricane had struck Florida, and it affected the family of one of their classmates. The students decided to come together to help their friend and others who were suffering. They collected donations and worked hard to support those affected by the disaster. Through their actions, they learned and demonstrated the true spirit of Seva.”

Support and Release Information

“The film ‘Chal Seva Kariye’ was set to be released in the Summer of 2019,” Grandpa said. “The students’ dedication and the message of the film aimed to inspire others to practice selfless service. If you wanted to support their film program, you could visit their website or contact Harbaldeep Singh for more information.”

Conclusion: A Legacy of Service

“Through their efforts,” Grandpa concluded, “the students at the Westborough Gurdwara showed how selfless service could change the world. They taught everyone that helping others and working together is what makes a difference. Their story reminds us all of the importance of kindness and selflessness.”

Nini listened intently, her eyes wide with admiration. “Grandpa, that’s such a wonderful story! I want to help others just like they did.”

Her grandfather smiled and gave her a gentle hug. “You can make a difference, Nini, by carrying the spirit of selfless service in your heart and actions, just like the students in the story.”
