Access to Clean Drinking Water Transforms a Rural School in Patiala
Reeth Kheri, Patiala – 13th September 2013:
Akal Academy Reeth Kheri, a premier rural educational institution under The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib, took a major step toward student health and well-being with the installation of an ultra-filtered drinking water system. This transformative initiative was made possible through the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative of Punjab & Sind Bank (PSB).
Akal Academy Reeth Kheri – A Rural School with an Urban Reach
Nestled in rural Punjab, Akal Academy Reeth Kheri is no ordinary village school. Each day, over 476 students commute from Patiala City to receive a high-quality, values-based education. The school integrates modern tools such as e-classrooms, advanced science labs, a language lab, and ERP systems, setting a benchmark in rural education.
However, despite academic excellence, the lack of clean drinking water due to poor groundwater quality had been a major concern—until now.
Punjab & Sind Bank Steps In – Clean Water Through Swiss Technology
Taking note of this challenge, Punjab & Sind Bank, under its CSR program, sponsored the installation of Swiss-made, ultra-filtered water purification systems with a capacity of 500 litres per hour. This compact and high-precision unit ensures access to safe and fresh drinking water for every student, significantly improving daily life at the academy.
Inauguration Ceremony – A Celebration of Community and Change
To commemorate the installation, a special ceremony was held, graced by Mr. M.K. Jain, Executive Director, PSB, along with Mr. I.S. Bhatia (General Manager) and Mr. S.S. Kalra (Zonal Manager, Patiala). Noted media personality Mr. J.S. Dardi, Chairman of Chardikala Publications and Press Council of India member, was the Guest of Honour.
The event began with a warm welcome song, “Su-Swagatam,” performed by Akal Academy’s girl students, setting a touching and respectful tone.
Leadership Speaks – A Vision for Health and Education
In his speech, Mr. M.K. Jain praised the school’s advanced infrastructure and the strong moral education being provided. He highlighted that:
“Water is the most essential requirement for physical and mental growth in children. We selected this Swiss technology because it’s ideal for areas like Reeth Kheri with groundwater issues. Punjab & Sind Bank, since 1908, has been committed to social service, and this is one more step in that journey.”
Community Participation and Poetic Tribute
The event was attended by hundreds of enthusiastic parents and community members. A special acknowledgment was given to Mr. B.S. Ahluwalia of Synergy Solar Pvt. Ltd., who provided the machine. The event concluded with a moving poem by a 7th-grade student, reflecting on the vital role of water and society’s duty to preserve it.
A Model for Sustainable CSR in Rural India
This CSR initiative by Punjab & Sind Bank at Akal Academy Reeth Kheri is a shining example of how corporate responsibility can drive grassroots change. By addressing critical infrastructure gaps in clean water access, the initiative not only improves health outcomes but also strengthens educational empowerment in rural India.
