The Golden Temple, a symbol of selfless service, has taken a significant step toward sustainability and health by introducing organic food in its langar. This move ensures that the approximately 1 lakh daily devotees enjoy chemical-free, pesticide-free meals.
Organic Produce at the Golden Temple
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) began serving organic vegetables, including carrots, radishes, spinach, and cabbage, in January. SGPC Secretary Daljit Kaur stated,
“The purpose is to serve devotees food that is chemical-free.”
Farming for a Better Cause
A 7-acre plot attached to Gurdwara Gurusar Satlani Sahib is being utilized for organic farming. Crops like wheat and fruits are already under cultivation, setting a precedent for other gurdwaras to adopt similar initiatives.
A Model for Sustainable Langar
SGPC currently receives around 1,000 kg of food supplies every three to four days, with plans to expand organic farming efforts to ensure a steady supply of natural produce.
This inspiring initiative not only promotes health but also reinforces the values of humility and care for nature within the Sikh community.
