We live in a Stark Contrast of Realities
While we sit in our rooms, asking for a cup of tea as rain pours outside our balcony, someone is spending their night at the rooftop of their flooded homes;
praying that the water level does not rise further,
praying that they would not lose everything
and in a hope that someone would help them.
For us rain on the balcony is poetic but for them it is the monster creeping in their homes and taking everything away.
The Devastating Situation in Punjab
This is the current situation of Punjab; and it is nothing short of devastating.
Thousands of people in punjab spend the night on the rooftops after the breaking of embankments of tributaries and overflowing of swollen rivers caused by incessant rain and the release of dam waters, This has also damaged their newly planted paddy crops in large areas. It is hard to imagine their state when the floods have not only swallowed homes but also the very source of survival of thousands of families.
Stranded Families and Affected Regions
Families stranded on the rooftops of their homes await desperately for relief supplies.
The worst hit regions include Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Amritsar, Tarn taran and Pathankot.
A Call for Solidarity
At this point Punjab does not just need sympathy it needs solidarity. The people who once fed the nation with their fields of gold now watch their crops down before their eyes. Their cries are not just theirs alone they echo across the county.
Akal Sewa Team of the kalgidhar trust Baru sahib was among the first ones who were contacted by the administration and to step forward for help, reaching the worst-hit areas with immediate relief.
