The Devastation – A Quake That Shook Kashmir
Twenty years ago, a catastrophic 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck Kashmir, flattening 80% of Uri. Over 1,345 lives were lost, 2,000 people went missing, and 36,000 homes were destroyed. The region was left in ruins, with thousands struggling to survive.
The Arrival of Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji
Amidst the devastation, Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji of The Kalgidhar Society, Baru Sahib, stepped in. Without delay, he mobilized a team of masons, plumbers, electricians, and dedicated sevadaars. Their mission was clear—rebuild homes, schools, places of worship, and restore normalcy before the harsh winter arrived.
Rebuilding Lives – A Mission of Strength and Service
For 70 days, the team worked tirelessly, investing ₹2.25 crores into relief efforts. They provided 1,850 homes worth of materials, repaired the Army Library, Training School, Canteen, and even restored the ancient Pandav Temple. Their commitment uplifted 10,175 lives in the affected areas.
Acknowledgment from the Government of India
Recognizing the impact of their efforts, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, documented their relief work in Uri and Tangdhar in its 2005-2006 report (Page 112).
A Vision Beyond Relief – Rebuilding Hope
Beyond offering langars and immediate relief, Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji believed in long-term rehabilitation. His vision ensured that people not only received food and aid but also regained their homes, education, and livelihoods.
