Delhi Fateh Diwas – The Day the Sikhs won Delhi from The Mughals

Delhi Fateh Diwas: When the Mughals fell, and the Nishan Sahib was unfurled at Red Fort !

What many of may not know, is that Delhi was once a domain of the brave Sikhs, who fought the Mughals and won.

In 1783, Baba Baghel Singh, accompanied by S. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, S. Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, with 30,000 troops on horses and elephants, entered Delhi, occupied the Diwan-e-Aam in Red Fort, and unfurled a Nishan Sahib.

Emperor Shah Alam II reconciled with the Sikhs by accepting their terms, including the construction of Gurdwaras on Sikh historical sites— Sis Ganj Sahib, Rakab Ganj Sahib, Bangla Sahib, Bala Sahib, Majnu Ka Tilla, Moti Bagh, Gurdwara Mata Sundri, and Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadur.

Delhi stands witness to the brave act of Baba Baghel Singh.

Some prominent places still have their names as derived from the significant event

•  Tis Hazari: The place where Baba Baghel Singh stopped with his troop of 30,000 men in Delhi. It is now a location for one of the six district courts in Delhi.
• Mori Gate: The spot where the  Sikhs breached the wall at the Red Fort with the help of a mason, rammed logs of wood through the wall, and entered.
• Mithai Pul: On winning the Red Fort, the Sikhs distributed sweets (The ISBT is at this location now.)

An Interesting fact: In 1783 The Sikhs conquered Delhi and took away the stone slab of Mughal Throne to Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar. Presently, it is lying on the floor of Ramgarhia Bunga.

The Sikh community celebrates this day with pride, as they commemorate the significant victory that paved the way for their influence and presence in the region.
