In 1993, while many doubted the success of the Akal Academy experiment, one of the first individuals to recognize and appreciate Baba Iqbal Singh’s visionary ‘Gurukul’ initiative at Akal Academy Baru Sahib was Mr. TN Kaul, ICS. A distinguished diplomat, former Foreign Secretary of India (twice), and Ambassador to the USA and the Soviet Union, Mr. Kaul acknowledged the transformative impact of this unique educational approach. His recognition validated Baba Iqbal Singh’s efforts, who was later posthumously honored with the Padma Shri award in 2022.
The ‘Gurukul’ Experiment – A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
The Akal Academy’s Gurukul model was designed to integrate traditional moral values with modern education, fostering holistic development in students. Mr. Kaul’s endorsement highlighted its potential to reshape rural education in India. His support helped garner attention and inspire belief in this initiative, proving that education rooted in values, ethics, and academic excellence could create well-rounded individuals.
A Legacy of Educational Transformation
From a single academy to a vast network, Baba Iqbal Singh’s vision has now flourished into 130 Akal Academies, educating over 70,000 students. The mission further extends to two private universities—Eternal University, Baru Sahib, Sirmour, and Akal University, Talwandi Sabo.
