In a quiet village of Punjab, a heartwarming legacy continues to grow. Akal Academy, Basarke established in memory of Dr. Kharag Singh Sachdeva Ji, the first Principal of Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot has become a beacon of hope and health for rural children, thanks to the visionary efforts of his family, Dr. Navjeet Kaur and Dr. Gurcharan Singh from the USA.
The Doctor couple’s commitment to rural upliftment recently took another giant leap as they partnered with Drexel University, Philadelphia, to combat one of the most silent yet painful health crises among children oral hygiene negligence.
International Wisdom, Local Impact
A team of dental health delegates from Drexel University arrived at Akal Academy, Basarke, to conduct an interactive and impactful workshop on “Oral Hygiene and Health.” Their mission is to tackle the epidemic of tooth decay affecting children as young as three in rural India. Students greeted the international guests with a soulful blend of Shabad Kirtan, vibrant rhymes, a thoughtful skit, and a high-energy Gatka performance. The welcome was an expression of gratitude, culture, and learning. This event was also held in memory of Dr Kharag Singh Sachdeva Ji.
Toothbrushes, Tips, and Tender Smiles
In the workshop, the Drexel team educated students on:-
• Proper brushing techniques through live demonstrations
• Early signs of tooth decay
• Importance of twice-daily brushing and dietary choices
• How poor oral hygiene affects overall health
Every child left the workshop not only more informed but also equipped each received a new toothbrush and toothpaste as a gift from the visiting experts.
Lessons Beyond the Classroom
The delegates emphasized that oral health should be a part of the regular school curriculum. Schools, they said, play a crucial role in shaping habits and ensuring health reaches every home. They praised Akal Academy for opening its doors to global partnerships for the betterment of its students.
