From Civil Service to Seva – A Journey That Still Inspires

They say the true wealth of a man lies in what he gives. S. Avtar Singh (22nd November 1930 – 10th October 2015) was one such soul whose life was a beacon of selfless service, compassion, and contribution to society. His story reminds us that impact lives far beyond lifespans and when one sows seeds of goodness, future generations reap the harvest.

Humble Beginnings, Noble Aspirations

Born in Faisalabad (now in Pakistan), Avtar Singh’s early life was one of resilience and commitment. He completed his graduation from Randhir College, Kapurthala, and went on to pursue his LLB from Law College, Jalandhar all while working as a clerk in the Punjab Civil Sector. This spirit of determination eventually led him to rise through the ranks of the Welfare Department, serving as District Welfare Officer in cities like Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Patiala.

Rising Through Service

He climbed the ladder from Assistant Director to Joint Welfare Director of Punjab, always upholding the values of integrity, empathy, and excellence. His passion was never just about titles it was about touching lives, uplifting the underserved, and being a bridge between policy and people.

A Legacy Etched in Education

Even after his illustrious government career, S. Avtar Singh’s heart beat for social upliftment. In 2002, he established the Bapu Charitable Trust to further his lifelong mission of community service. But perhaps his most remarkable act of giving came in 2008 when he donated more than 4 acres of his ancestral land to The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib.
That sacred donation now stands as Akal Academy, Peer Baksh Wala an institution that today nurtures 464 students with CBSE-affiliated, value-based education. Every classroom echoes with the silent gratitude for a man who believed in building futures, not just fortunes.

A Soul That Continues to Shine

S. Avtar Singh departed this world on 10th October 2015, but his presence is alive in every lesson taught, every child who dares to dream, and every act of kindness inspired by his story.
His journey teaches us that greatness doesn’t always roar. Sometimes, it gently sows fields for others to bloom.
May we all aspire to be torchbearers of such goodness.
