Class 10 Girl from Akal Academy Ratia Showcases Innovative Solar Switch at SCERT Model Exhibition in Delhi

A Moment of Pride for Ratia and Akal Academy

It’s a proud moment for Akal Academy and the residents of Ratia village, as Harmanpreet Kaur, a bright class 10 student, is among the 25 young talents selected by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to represent at the prestigious Model Exhibition in Delhi. Chosen from among 350 participants at the district level, Harmanpreet now competes at the state level with her innovative project titled “The Solar Switch.”

Daughter of an Army Martyr, Raised by a Strong Mother

Harmanpreet’s journey is deeply inspiring. She is the only daughter of an Army martyr and is raised by her mother, an Anganwadi worker, who single-handedly managed both household and Harman’s education. In a village where many still question the importance of educating girls, her success breaks all barriers and stereotypes.

From District Level to State Stage – Her Selection Journey

Her model was selected during a district-level competition where over 350 science projects were presented by students from various schools. Only the top 25 were chosen to proceed to the Delhi exhibition. Harmanpreet stood out with her innovative thinking and commitment.

The Idea Behind “The Solar Switch”

Mentored by her Physics teacher Mr. Harbans Singh, Harmanpreet developed the idea of “The Solar Switch,” a device that uses a photo sensor to automatically turn devices on/off based on light intensity. Her project is supported under the INSPIRE Award Scheme by the Central Government, receiving ₹5000 for its development.

The model can be adapted to use thermo or sound sensors, allowing electrical devices to respond to heat or pre-set sounds—demonstrating the project’s vast scope and utility.

Harmanpreet’s Vision for the Future

Harmanpreet hopes to take her project to the National Level and encourages other students to contribute ideas to enhance it further. She believes in collaborative innovation and welcomes modifications for broader applications.

Mentor’s Future Plans – Connecting Alumni with Innovation

Her mentor, Mr. Harbans Singh, aims to connect this project with Akal Academy Ratia alumni, Sharanjeet Singh and Sahil, both now at IIT Delhi, to refine the model with advanced technical input.

Gratitude to Akal Academy and Her Mother’s Strength

When asked what inspired her love for science, Harmanpreet credited her mother’s unwavering support and her nurturing education at Akal Academy Ratia, run by The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib. She praised the school for offering a balanced education that blends spirituality, social values, and modern science.
