Honouring Excellence – The 6th Annual CIBC Midweek South Asian Awards

The dazzling 6th Annual CIBC Midweek South Asian Awards, hosted by Y Media and CIBC on October 12, 2013, took place at the Grand Victorian Convention Centre, Mississauga, Ontario. Since its inception in 2007, this prestigious event recognizes the achievements of outstanding South Asians from local and global communities.

Mr. Yudhvir Jaswal, CEO & Group Editor of Y Media, along with his team, welcomed a host of dignitaries and changemakers who are shaping the future through their exceptional work and contributions.

A New Category, A Rising Star – Harnoor Gill Named Teen of the Year

One of the most exciting new additions to this year’s award ceremony was the “South Asian Teen of the Year” category – and it was none other than Harnoor Gill who received this honour. At just 15, Gill has made waves as a passionate activist, published writer, motivational speaker, and founder of the Peace Welcome Club (PWC), which he established at the age of 14 in February 2012.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, this Indian-origin youth is currently a sophomore at Christ the King Catholic Secondary School in Georgetown, Ontario.

Youth Power in Action – Recognition Among Greats

Harnoor was one of nine outstanding individuals recognized at the ceremony for their achievements and contributions. Other recipients included:

  • Arun Srivastava – Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Vijay Sappani – Youth of the Year
  • Anil Chawla – Professional of the Year
  • Dr. Lalita Malhotra – Humanitarian of the Year
  • Rabbi Shergill – Artist of the Year
  • Stewart Bell – Award for Bravery and Courage
  • Mayor Susan Fennell – Diversity Award
  • Harbhajan Singh – Sher-E-Punjab Award (in absentia)

Gill stood tall among them, showing that age is no barrier when passion leads the way.

Harnoor’s Message – Volunteerism Begins at Home

In his acceptance speech, Harnoor Gill shared a heartfelt message:

“I am so thankful to Y Media for such a great honour… I encourage all South Asian media to focus on Canadian issues, especially youth-led projects that promote volunteerism.”

He emphasized that community involvement starts at home and encouraged parents to volunteer alongside their children, not just for fulfilling high school requirements, but to truly make a difference.

Accolades Galore – A Track Record of Impact

Harnoor Gill’s list of awards is already impressive:

  • International Diana Award (2013)
  • International Eco-Hero Award (2013)
  • YMCA Peace Medallion (2012)
  • Queen Jubilee Medal (2012)
  • Named in Top 15 Under 15 (2011)

Final Thoughts – Small Town, Big Dreams

Though he lives in the small, close-knit community of Georgetown, Harnoor’s work has made a global impact. He continues to inspire youth to rise above expectations and step into leadership roles that create real, lasting change.
