Learning about the significance of obeying the command of the Master on this Parkash Purab – Sakhi Maluka Chaudhary

On the occasion of Prakash Purab of Guru Angad Dev Ji, here’s the Sakhi (story)  of Maluka Chaudhry to teach us a moral lesson.

Sakhi of Maluka Chaudhry

This an  intriguing Sakhi, or story, of Maluka Chaudhary, who lived in Khadur. He was a notorious drunkard and meat-eater, suffering from epilepsy. Maluka had tried various medicines, but nothing seemed to work for him.
He came to know about the miraculous powers of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second master of Sikhs.

Maluka decided to seek refuge with Guru Ji and humbly requested, “Maharaj, please cure me of this disease.”
Guru Ji knew of  Maluka’s bad habits and advised him.  He asked Maluka to promise to abstain from alcohol and meat.
Guru Ji blessing came with a warning too. That as long as Maluka remained true to his promise, the disease would stay away from him.

Maluka left Guru Ji’s shelter and stayed true to his promise for some time. As long as he didn’t drink or eat meat, he remained free from the disease.
However, one rainy day, Maluka’s old cravings and habits came creeping back. He craved alcohol and began to doubt whether he was really cured. He got himself drunk, and in his drunkenness, he climbed to the top of a barn. There he started shouting rudely at Guru Ji, saying that he had broken his promise and nothing had happened to him.

But Guru Ji had blessed him with the condition of staying true to his promise . Guru Angad Dev Ji had said that the disease was bound by Maluka’s word, and if he broke it, he would suffer the consequences. Maluka didn’t listen and continued to speak ill of Guru Ji.

In his drunken and excited state, Maluka  suffered a sudden epileptic attack, fell from the barn, and died on the spot.
He paid the ultimate price for disobeying Guru Ji’s words and speaking badly of him.

The moral of this story is clear – we should never break our promises to our Guru Ji. It’s essential to follow their teachings, even when it goes against our own desires. The Guru’s teachings keeps us on the right path, and protects us from harm in many ways.
Maluka’s downfall teaches us that when we go against our Guru’s words, we only harm ourselves. So, let’s learn from Maluka’s tragic fate and strive to stay true to our Guru’s word and Baani.
