Pakistan makes History by becoming the First Country to give legal Status to Sikh Marriages

In a historic move, the provincial assembly of Punjab, Pakistan, has unanimously passed the Punjab Sikhs Anand Karaj Marriages Act 2017, marking a significant milestone for the Sikh community in the Muslim-majority nation.

A Step Towards Equality and Inclusion

The passage of the bill, tabled by Minority Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, signifies a landmark shift in the legal landscape of Pakistan. For the first time, family matters such as Sikh marriages will be regulated separately, providing legal recognition and protection to unions within the Sikh community.

 Modernizing Marriage Laws

The enactment of the Punjab Sikhs Anand Karaj Marriages Act 2017 marks the repeal of the outdated Anand Marriage Act, 1909, a relic of British colonial rule. By replacing this antiquated legislation, Pakistan takes a significant stride towards modernizing its legal framework to reflect the diverse religious and cultural landscape of the nation.

Preserving Sikh Traditions and Practices

Under the new law, every Sikh marriage will be solemnized in accordance with the religious practices outlined in the Sikh religious text, Guru Granth Sahib. The ceremony, known as Anand Karaj, symbolizes the lawful union of a Sikh male and Sikh female, preserving age-old traditions and customs intrinsic to the Sikh faith.

Ensuring Access to Justice

The Punjab government will appoint registrars to oversee the issuance of marriage deeds and registration of Sikh marriages under the Act. This institutional framework ensures that every union is formally recognized and recorded, granting couples access to legal rights and protections.

Facilitating Marriage Dissolution

The Act also provides mechanisms for the dissolution of Sikh marriages, emphasizing reconciliation and amicable resolution of disputes. By establishing arbitration councils and defined procedures for dissolution, the legislation promotes harmony and fairness in marital matters.

Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion

The legal recognition of Sikh marriages in Pakistan marks a historic milestone in the nation’s journey towards inclusivity and diversity. By affirming the rights and identities of religious minorities, Pakistan sets a precedent for fostering harmony and unity among its diverse populace.

Embracing Progress and Unity

As Pakistan pioneers the legal recognition of Sikh marriages, it sets a shining example of progress and unity in a world often divided by religious and cultural differences. By embracing diversity and upholding the rights of minority communities, Pakistan paves the way for a more inclusive and harmonious society.
