The story of Shaheed Bhai Jai Singh Khalkaat is one of unparalleled courage and devotion. This Gursikh from the village of Mughalmajra, near Patiala, exemplified the Sikh spirit by choosing death over compromising his faith. His sacrifice remains a poignant reminder of steadfastness in the face of tyranny.
A Devout Gursikh of Mughalmajra
Bhai Jai Singh was known for his deep spirituality and adherence to the Sikh Rehat (code of conduct). Living in the village of Mughalmajra, he spent his days in honest labor and Naam Abhyaas (meditation on the Divine Name).
The Encounter with Governor Abdul Samund Khan
In 1753, while meditating in his fields, Bhai Jai Singh was approached by Abdul Samund Khan, a Mughal governor, and his entourage. Unaware of their presence, Bhai Sahib did not rise or acknowledge them. Offended, the governor’s aide ordered Bhai Jai Singh to carry their baggage, which included a bag of tobacco.
Refusal to Touch Tobacco
When Bhai Jai Singh learned that the bag contained tobacco, he refused to touch it, citing his Guru’s command against it. His unwavering stance angered the Mughals, leading to severe consequences.
Tortured but Unyielding
Bhai Jai Singh was subjected to brutal torture. His feet were tied to a tree, and his skin was peeled off starting from his feet. Throughout this ordeal, Bhai Sahib kept chanting Vaheguru, maintaining his connection with the Divine.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
Bhai Jai Singh attained martyrdom, followed by the execution of his entire family, including his wife Mata Dhan Kaur, sons Karaka Singh and Kharak Singh, and daughter-in-law Bibi Raj Kaur. Their collective sacrifice highlighted their unshakable faith and commitment to Sikh principles.
Gurdwara Baran – A Memorial of Courage
Today, Gurdwara Baran stands in the village to commemorate the sacrifice of Bhai Jai Singh and his family. It serves as a place of inspiration for Sikhs, reminding them of their rich legacy of valor and devotion.
