Pioneering Solar Energy in Rural Education
TERI ENVIS, supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, has spotlighted The Kalgidhar Society’s groundbreaking solar energy project in rural institutions. This case study, featured in the ‘Compendium of Renewable Energy and Climate Change Case Studies in India – Volume 5,’ highlights their transformative work.
Visionary Leadership of Baba Iqbal Singh Ji
The late Shiromani Panth Ratan Baba Iqbal Singh Ji envisioned sustainable solutions to combat global warming and rising electricity costs. Utilizing vacant rooftops, the society installed 3750 solar panels for a 1.2 MWp project, covering 1.3 lakh square feet and advancing environmental conservation.
Decade of Solar Initiatives at Baru Sahib
The society’s journey began a decade ago with projects like Himachal Pradesh’s first stand-alone 200 kWp solar plant, solar water heating systems, and thermal solar cooking solutions for large-scale community meals. These initiatives extended to various academies and earned recognition, including a 2016 Solar Award from MNRE.
Environmental and Financial Benefits
This solar PV project is set to reduce 35,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions over 25 years, equating to planting 82,000 trees. It also saves ₹1 crore annually on electricity bills. The initiative boosts rural education, aiming to install solar panels across all 129 schools, promoting a greener future.
Leading the Way in Rural Sustainability
The Kalgidhar Society’s solar energy project exemplifies how renewable energy can uplift rural education while combating climate change. Their commitment to sustainability ensures a brighter and greener tomorrow for underprivileged communities.
