Celebrating Sikh Heritage – Awareness and Diversity in California

Honoring Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month

Throughout November, Santa Clara celebrates Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month, with Joy of Sewa, a nonprofit organization, hosting engaging activities to educate the community about Sikhism—a faith that originated in Punjab, India, in the 15th century.

Exploring Sikh Pioneers in America

A highlight of the events was a presentation on “Becoming American: The Story of the Sikh Pioneers of California Migration Over 125 Years” by Dr. Jasbir Singh Kang at Central Park Library on November 19. Dr. Kang, founder of the Punjabi Heritage Society and Punjab Digital Archive at UC Davis, discussed the rich history of Sikh migration and contributions in America.

Core Sikh Values and American Ideals

Sikhism, the fifth-largest religion in the world, promotes oneness of God, equality, selfless service, and social justice. Dr. Kang emphasized that Sikh and American values align, as both promote hard work, justice, and diversity.

The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion

Panelists Jennifer Myhre, Ameeta Tiwana, and Sangeeta Luthra discussed the significance of diversity and the challenges faced by immigrants. They highlighted contributions from Sikh pioneers like Dr. Narinder Singh Kapany, the Father of Fiber Optics.

Celebrating Sikh Identity Through Traditions

Guests at the event enjoyed Indian pakoras and had the opportunity to experience Sikh culture firsthand by trying on turbans, which symbolize honor and identity. Women, though not traditionally wearing turbans, are recognized by the kara, a stainless steel bracelet worn as a symbol of faith.

Challenges Faced by the Sikh Community

Despite their contributions, Sikhs in America continue to face discrimination. Incidents like the attack on a Sikh man in Richmond highlight the misidentification and prejudice they endure. Dr. Kang also addressed the bullying of Sikh children, a pressing concern within the community.

Sikh Contributions in America

With over 500,000 Sikhs living in the U.S., Yuba City has the largest Sikh population outside of India. The city hosts an annual Sikh Parade in November, attracting thousands of attendees. The “Becoming American” exhibit at Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County permanently showcases Sikh history.

Sikh Awareness Month Grand Finale

The celebrations will conclude on December 3 at Don Callejon School, Santa Clara, with cultural performances, films, kids’ activities, a turban fashion show, and a blood and bone marrow drive. Visit www.saam-ca.org for more details.
