Once upon a time, in the serene village of Kartarpur, Punjab, lived a remarkable woman named Mata Gujar Kaur, who would later be revered as Mata Gujri Ji. Born in 1624, she grew up surrounded by devotion and spirituality, thanks to her parents, Bhai Lal Chand Subulikka and Bishan Kaur, who instilled in her the values of piety and faith.
One day, her life took a momentous turn when she married Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. Their marriage was not just a union of hearts but a collaboration in spreading the teachings of Sikhism. Together, they championed the cause of religious freedom and righteousness.
As a mother, Mata Gujri Ji played a crucial role in shaping the future of Sikhism. Her son, Guru Gobind Singh, would go on to become the last human Sikh Guru. She nurtured him with love and wisdom, instilling in him the virtues of courage, justice, and compassion.
The winds of change brought turbulent times as the Mughal-Sikh conflicts intensified. During these trying moments, Mata Gujri Ji became the guardian of her grandsons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh. Despite facing tremendous hardships, she remained resolute in her duty to protect her family and preserve their legacy.
The trials did not end there. Mata Gujri Ji, along with her grandsons, was imprisoned in the cold and harsh confines of Thanda Burj in Sirhind. In the face of imminent danger, her faith never wavered. Upon learning of her grandsons’ impending execution, she embraced martyrdom with unwavering resolve at the age of 81, embodying the true spirit of sacrifice and devotion.
Mata Gujri Ji’s life is a testament to the enduring values of Sikhism. Her story of selfless sacrifice, unyielding faith, and maternal devotion continues to inspire and uplift generations of Sikhs, reminding them of the power of courage and the importance of standing firm in one’s principles.
