The Divine Guardian of Domegaon – Guru Granth Sahib as Maharashtra’s Miracle-Working Deity

A Village Steeped in Faith

Domegaon, a quaint village in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district, is home to a unique spiritual legacy. Nestled on the banks of the Godavari River, this village has revered Guru Granth Sahib as its divine protector for over 165 years. This is the story of how a sacred scripture became a miracle-working deity for a multi-faith community.

The Journey to Domegaon – A Spiritual Quest

In June 1994, Capt. Hardev Singh and I embarked on a journey to Domegaon, driven by curiosity about the village’s legendary faith in Guru Granth Sahib. Despite its remote location, the village’s spiritual significance drew us in, promising a tale of devotion and miracles.

The Legend of Guru Granth Sahib and the Floods

For over a century, the villagers have believed that Guru Granth Sahib holds the power to control the Godavari’s floods. During times of crisis, the holy scripture is carried to the river, and the waters recede, sparing the village from destruction. This unshakable faith has been passed down through generations.

The Gurdwara of Birdh Baba – A Sacred Sanctuary

The Gurdwara Sri Birdh Baba, constructed in 1968, stands as a testament to the village’s devotion. Built on the site where a Sikh saint, Birdh Baba, meditated with a handwritten copy of Guru Granth Sahib, the Gurdwara is a symbol of unity and faith for Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists alike.

The Handwritten Guru Granth Sahib – A Rare Treasure

The ancient handwritten volume of Guru Granth Sahib, preserved in Domegaon, is a marvel in itself. Dating back to 1844, this sacred text contains 1006 pages and is written in black ink. Its unique contents and historical significance make it a priceless artifact in need of urgent preservation.

Birdh Baba – The Mystic Saint of Domegaon

Birdh Baba, the revered saint who brought Guru Granth Sahib to Domegaon, is remembered for his spiritual prowess and miracles. From meditating on the riverbanks to performing acts of divine intervention, his legacy continues to inspire the villagers’ faith.

A Multi-Faith Community United by Devotion

Domegaon is a rare example of religious harmony. With a Gurdwara, Krishna temple, mosque, and Buddhist Gompa coexisting peacefully, the village celebrates festivals and traditions together, transcending religious and caste barriers.

The Miracle of the Jhoola – A Testament to Faith

Even after Birdh Baba’s passing, the miracles associated with Guru Granth Sahib continued. During a flood, the waters receded the moment they touched the Jhoola (swing) holding the holy scripture, reinforcing the villagers’ belief in its divine power.

Preserving the Legacy

The ancient handwritten Guru Granth Sahib is in urgent need of scientific preservation. Despite efforts by the Sikh community, more must be done to protect this invaluable artifact for future generations.

A Village of Unwavering Faith

Domegaon’s story is a testament to the power of faith and unity. In a world often divided by religion, this village stands as a beacon of harmony, where Guru Granth Sahib is not just a scripture but a living, miracle-working deity.
