The Kalgidhar Society – The Heroes Behind Baru Sahib

The Kalgidhar Society – The Heroes Behind Baru Sahib

Have you ever wondered what happens when deep spiritual wisdom meets modern academic excellence? The answer lies hidden in a peaceful valley of the Himalayas: Baru Sahib.

What started as a quiet dream over a century ago has transformed into a massive educational movement. Today, The Kalgidhar Society manages 130 Akal Academies, two universities, and major medical initiatives, giving over 70,000 rural children a brighter future.

But who are the incredible minds behind this revolution? Let’s dive into the powerful stories of the dreamers, builders, and modern leaders who turned a remote mountain village into a global model for value-based education in rural India.

The Dreamer – Sant Attar Singh Ji (1866–1927)

Every great tree begins with a single seed. For Baru Sahib, that seed was planted by Sant Attar Singh Ji.

Born in the small village of Cheema, Punjab, Sant Attar Singh Ji carried a unique conviction that was far ahead of his time. In a world where people often separate spiritual life from scientific knowledge, he completely disagreed. He envisioned a sanctuary in the Himalayas where young minds could absorb both spiritual wisdom and cutting-edge modern science without compromising either.

Though he passed away in 1927 before the first brick was laid, his vision remained alive, waiting for the right hands to build it.

The Global Proof – Sant Teja Singh Ji (1882–1965)

If you need proof that spiritual grounding can coexist with the world’s highest academic rigor, look no further than Sant Teja Singh Ji. Originally named Niranjan Singh Mehta, he achieved what few Indians of his era could—earning a master’s degree from Harvard University in 1911. Instead of chasing corporate wealth in the West, he chose a life of spiritual service. He beautifully blended Western academic sharpness with deep Sikh spiritual discipline, creating the exact blueprint for what Baru Sahib teaches today.

The Ultimate Builder – Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji (1926–2022)

An idea stays an idea until someone picks up a hammer. For Baru Sahib, that builder was Sant Baba Iqbal Singh Ji.

The Legacy of Baba Iqbal Singh Ji

  • 1986: Started a single classroom with just 5 rural students.
  • Today: Over 130 Akal Academies, 2 Universities, and 70,000+ Students.
  • 2022: Conferred the prestigious Padma Shri Award by the President of India.

Baba Iqbal Singh Ji spent his career as a government official, retiring as the Director of Agriculture in Himachal Pradesh. While most people slow down after retirement, his true mission began at age 60. In 1986, he walked into a secluded Himalayan village and opened a school for just five students.

Over the next four decades, he turned those five students into a sprawling ecosystem of Akal Academies, two universities, a charitable hospital, and drug de-addiction centers. He was recognized globally, being named among the top five most influential Sikhs by the UK Sikh Directory and receiving the Padma Shri in 2022. He passed away at age 96, leaving behind no personal property or wealth—only a towering legacy of transformed lives.
