Lana Bhalta – Himachal’s Model Village in Sanitation and Zero Waste Management

A Shining Example of Sanitation and Waste Management

Nestled in the serene Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, Lana Bhalta stands as a shining example of sanitation and zero waste management. With toilets in all 333 households, an innovative waste filtration system for kitchen water, and a complete absence of garbage or polluted water, this remote village has garnered accolades for its cleanliness and recycling initiatives.

Awards and Recognition for Cleanliness

Under the leadership of Gram Pradhan Jagjit Singh, the village meets all 43 state-set norms for cleanliness awards. Each household is equipped with a sanitation kit, including essentials like jute garbage bags, nail cutters, and dustbins. Five anganwadis feature child-friendly toilets, ensuring hygiene for all age groups.

An Effective Recycling System

The village generates approximately 1,200 kg of daily waste, processed through a robust recycling system. A dedicated lorry collects waste, which is then sorted and repurposed. Paper is recycled, food waste becomes manure, and building debris finds use in construction. Toxic waste is safely incinerated, leaving no residue unused.

Community Efforts and Health Benefits

Community efforts, led by Nav Yuvak Mandal, Mahila Mandals, and local art groups like Kala Jatha, played a pivotal role in transforming the village. Campaigns and competitions promoted cleanliness and health consciousness, leading to reduced dysentery cases, decreased smoking, and the closure of liquor vends.

Support from the Kalgidhar Trust

The Kalgidhar Trust, supporting the village’s mission, provided sanitation kits and financial aid for toilet construction. Nursing students also contributed by raising awareness.
