On July 17, 2015, history witnessed the fulfillment of a 309-year-old divine prophecy of Guru Gobind Singh Ji with the inauguration of Akal University at Talwandi Sabo, Sri Damdama Sahib. This milestone marks the realization of the Tenth Guru’s vision of “Guru Ki Kashi,” transforming the land into a revered center for knowledge and spirituality.
The journey to fulfill this prophecy was a collective effort supported by Sikh communities across the globe. Contributions came from individuals across various social strata, united by their faith and dedication to making this vision a reality.
Baba Iqbal Singh Ji – The Driving Force
At the heart of this monumental endeavor was Baba Iqbal Singh Ji, the 90-year-old President of the Kalgidhar Society. Known for his tireless commitment to rural education through over 130 schools in North India, Baba Ji took on the divine mission to establish Akal University. Despite his frail health, he traversed continents, inspiring an army of volunteers and donors to bring this vision to life.
In just 24 months, a sprawling campus of 6,50,000 square feet was constructed, setting a new benchmark in dedication and efficiency.
The Grand Inauguration
The inauguration ceremony was a moment of divine celebration, graced by Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Sukhbir Singh Badal, and several cabinet members. The event began with melodious hymns performed by students of Akal Academy, Baru Sahib, and renowned Kirtaniyas, creating a spiritual ambiance.
The august gathering included Singh Sahib Giani Gurmukh Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, and other luminaries who blessed the occasion.
A Hub for Holistic Education
Akal University offers a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including Economics, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, English, Punjabi, and Music. Uniquely, the university also provides a Bachelor with Honors in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, underscoring its commitment to blending modern education with spiritual teachings.
Dr. Gurmail Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Akal University, emphasized the institution’s vision:
