After four gallantry medals, CRPF Deputy Commandant Harshpal Singh awarded the Kirti Chakara.

A Legacy of Valor

At 38 years old, Deputy Commandant Harshpal Singh of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has etched his name in the annals of valor with an extraordinary display of courage spanning over a decade. Despite his numerous accolades, remembering the dates of his awards seems trivial amidst the profound experiences he has endured in the line of duty.

The Triumph of Courage

Harshpal’s latest recognition came on the 73rd Independence Day when he was bestowed with the Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peacetime gallantry medal. This honor was a testament to his unwavering bravery during an intense encounter with terrorists in Jhajjar-Kotli, Jammu, where he and his team neutralized three militants. Recalling the harrowing incident, Harshpal recounted the tense 24-hour search before the decisive encounter unfolded. Engaged in close-quarter combat, with the terrorists mere meters away, the valorous actions of Harshpal and his team thwarted an impending attack on the Indian Army’s Northern Command headquarters.

The Path of Heroism

This isn’t Harshpal’s first rendezvous with valor. Since joining the CRPF in 2004, he has been decorated with five gallantry awards, including three police medals for gallantry and a Jharkhand Chief Minister’s Police medal for gallantry. His journey into the realm of bravery commenced in 2008 when he received his first police medal for gallantry after leading a daring operation in Chundarmandu, Jharkhand. Faced with a formidable Maoist presence, Harshpal’s strategic maneuvers resulted in the elimination of five senior Maoist leaders, despite being outnumbered.

A Saga of Courageous Exploits

In subsequent years, Harshpal continued to demonstrate his mettle in anti-insurgency operations. In 2014, he led a mission to neutralize a senior Maoist commander in Khunti, navigating through treacherous terrains and hostile fire to ensure the mission’s success. A year later, he orchestrated another precision strike, eliminating the zonal Maoist commander of Khunti and apprehending his deputy. These feats earned him the admiration of his peers and the recognition of the Jharkhand government.

Navigating the Complexities

Drawing comparisons between the Maoist insurgency in Jharkhand and the terrorism prevalent in Jammu and Kashmir, Harshpal underscores the nuanced dynamics of each theater. While the Maoists operate with meticulous planning and stealth, the militants in J&K possess greater firepower and unwavering determination. Despite these challenges, Harshpal’s resolve remains unshaken as he continues to serve on the front lines of counter-insurgency operations.

An Inspiration Amidst Adversity

Director General CRPF RR Bhatnagar lauds Harshpal’s exemplary service, emphasizing the rarity and significance of his numerous gallantry awards. Harshpal’s indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to duty serve as a beacon of inspiration for his fellow officers and a testament to the courage of India’s security forces in the face of adversity.
