A Unique Honor – Akal Academies Case Study Listed on HBR
The Akal Academies, a network of rural schools under the Kalgidhar Trust, have achieved a remarkable milestone. A case study on their innovative education model, authored by Dr. AS Ghura and Prof. Vijay Sherry Chand from IIM-Ahmedabad, has been selected for Harvard Business Review’s (HBR) prestigious case collection. This recognition highlights the global relevance of their approach to blending spirituality and scientific education.
The Visionaries Behind Akal Academies
The journey began with Baba Iqbal Singh, a former Director of Agriculture in Himachal Pradesh, who dedicated his life to fulfilling the vision of his spiritual mentors, Sant Attar Singh Ji and Sant Teja Singh Ji. Sant Attar Singh conceptualized the idea of combining moral values with scientific education, while Sant Teja Singh, a Harvard alumnus, laid the foundation of Baru Sahib, the headquarters of the Kalgidhar Trust.
The Dilemma That Shaped the Future of Rural Education
In 2007, the Trust faced a crucial decision. How could it scale its operations from 19 schools to 500 Akal Academies within a decade, catering to 250,000 students? Should they pursue public-private partnerships, management contracts, or lease land for new schools? This strategic dilemma became the focus of the IIM-A case study.
A Transformative Model of Education and Funding
The case study highlights the unique model of Akal Academies. By merging spiritual teachings with high-quality scientific education, inspired by Sikh principles, the Trust grew from a single school in 1986 to 129 schools by 2018, serving over 70,000 students. The financial strategy combined donation-based funding with loan-driven models for new schools, offering a sustainable blueprint for future educational enterprises.
The Legacy of Sant Teja Singh – A Harvard Connection
Sant Teja Singh holds the distinction of being the first turbaned Sikh to graduate from Harvard University in 1911. His legacy continues to inspire as the case study not only highlights the achievements of the Akal Academies but also serves as a tribute to his vision of education and service.
Recognition on a Global Platform – Harvard Business Case Centre
Being included in Harvard Business Review’s case collection is a monumental achievement for the Kalgidhar Trust. It signifies international recognition of their innovative approach to education and their commitment to transforming rural communities.
The Akal Academies case study stands as a testament to the power of vision, innovation, and dedication. This global acknowledgment underscores the impact of combining spirituality with scientific education, inspiring future leaders in the education sector.
