Akal University Leads Punjab’s Solar Revolution in Rural Education

Inauguration of Punjab’s Largest Solar Energy Project

Akal University in Bathinda has taken a giant step towards sustainability with the inauguration of a 1.2 MWp solar power project. The Managing Director of SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India), Jatindra Nath Swain, IAS, inaugurated the project, hailing it as the largest for any rural educational institution in the state.

Collaborative Effort for Green Energy

The project, inaugurated at a cost of ₹5.2 crores, includes a subsidy of ₹1.7 crores from the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy. The initiative will supply over 80% of the energy requirements of Akal University and 13 Akal Academies. Key dignitaries like Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal (Eco Baba), Dr. Davinder Singh, and Dr. Gurmail Singh were present to mark this historic moment.

Commitment to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Teachings

Baba Seechewal emphasized the importance of respecting natural resources, aligning the project with the spiritual teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who referred to water and earth as parents. He encouraged schools to adopt solar power to enhance sustainability in education.

Tackling Climate Change with Renewable Energy

This solar plant will reduce 35,000 metric tons of carbon emissions over 25 years, equivalent to planting 82,000 trees. Annual energy cost savings are estimated at ₹1 crore, further strengthening the institution’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Expanding the Solar Network

The Kalgidhar Society has installed 59 solar power plants across Akal Academies and universities, making significant strides in adopting clean energy. This project spans 14 locations, including Akal University, and continues their legacy of sustainable practices.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

Jatindra Nath Swain lauded the Kalgidhar Society’s contributions towards India’s renewable energy goals, urging focus on water conservation and rainwater harvesting alongside solar initiatives to combat climate change effectively.

A Symbol of Leadership in Sustainability

With its pioneering solar energy projects and green initiatives, Akal University is not only transforming rural education but also setting an example in climate action. This monumental achievement reinforces the role of educational institutions in fostering sustainability.
