A Million Trees – A Gift to the Planet
In a heartfelt tribute to Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his 550th Prakash Purab, Sikhs worldwide are participating in a mission to plant one million trees as a “gift to the planet.” This initiative aims to combat environmental degradation and rekindle the bond between humanity and nature.
The Global Effort Led by EcoSikh
The Million Tree Project, spearheaded by EcoSikh, a Washington DC-based environmental organization, is leading this global effort. Rajwant Singh, president of EcoSikh, highlighted that the project celebrates Guru Nanak’s teachings about nature being a reflection of divinity. He shared, “Guru Nanak was deeply connected to nature. His hymns remind us that air, water, and earth are our spiritual guides.”
Inspiring the Younger Generation
The campaign is inspiring Sikhs across the globe, particularly the younger generation, to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the environment. Already, tens of thousands of trees have been planted as part of the project.
A Movement Spanning Continents
The initiative has gained traction in India, where Punjab plans to plant 550 saplings in every village, as well as in the UK, US, Australia, and Kenya. Sikh Union Coventry, for example, is planting native trees and shrubs in parks and schools, ensuring the benefits of this project extend across generations.
Reaffirming Faith Through Environmental Action
Palvinder Singh Chana, chair of Sikh Union Coventry, emphasized, “As Sikhs, our connection to the environment is an integral part of our faith and identity. Future generations will benefit from the fruits of our labor, symbolizing peace, friendships, and continuity for years to come.”
Building Sustainable Forests for the Future
EcoSikh is collaborating with Afforestt, an organization that helps create fast-growing, sustainable native forests. Over 1,800 forests are planned globally as part of this ambitious initiative. The goal of planting one million trees is expected to be achieved by Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday in November.
