What If You Had to Travel Hours Just to See a Doctor?
For many of us, seeing a doctor is as easy as booking an appointment and walking into a clinic. But in the quiet, remote corners of rural India, healthcare is still a distant dream.
Imagine being unwell in a village where the nearest hospital is 50 kilometers away. No ambulance. No doctor nearby. Just a long, exhausting journey over winding roads—and that too when you’re already in pain.
This is the everyday reality for thousands of families living in rural and hilly areas. It’s not just about distance. It’s about access, affordability, and awareness.
On World Health Day, we are reminded: Healthcare should not be a privilege. It should be a right—for everyone.
Healing with Heart – The ‘Akal Healthcare’ Mission in the Hills
In the peaceful valley of Baru Sahib, The Kalgidhar Trust is quietly changing lives in the difficult hill terrain. Beyond education and spiritual upliftment, the Trust is bringing quality healthcare to remote corners of rural India. It runs a dedicated Akal Healthcare Program for the purpose.
Through free medical and surgical camps like Operation Rainbow Canada , doctors and volunteers reach those who would otherwise go without care—offering check-ups, treatments, surgeries, and support right at their doorsteps.
- 3–4 medical camps are organized every year, reaching the unreached with timely care.
- 200+ free medical camps conducted till date
With every camp and clinic, the Trust reaffirms a simple truth—healthcare should heal with heart, and reach everyone, everywhere.
Akal Charitable Hospital – A Hospital with a Heart
Nestled in the Himalayas, Akal Charitable Hospital is a lifeline for communities spread across a 100-kilometer radius, serving regions like Nohradhar, Sangrah, Habban, Rajgarh, Haripurdhar, Chopal, Renuka, Kupvi, Jubbal, and Kotkhai.
At this 100-bed hospital, healing isn’t just a service—it’s a mission.
- 45,000+ patients treated every year
- 265+ free surgeries performed annually
- 30,000+ OPD consultations
- Free accommodations and meals for patients and their families
- Care with dignity—regardless of religion, caste, or background
When the world was battling COVID-19, this hospital was declared a Dedicated COVID Care Center in 2021—standing strong when it mattered most.
Reclaiming Lives – Drug De-addiction and Mental Wellness
Substance abuse continues to take a quiet toll in rural communities, often hidden behind shame and lack of support. To address this crisis, The Kalgidhar Trust operates three drug de-addiction centers, where:
- 8,000+ patients have been treated
- 36,000+ OPD visits recorded
- 80% success rate achieved through sustained support
But healing from addiction isn’t just about detox—it’s also about the mind and spirit.
That’s why the Sukhman initiative has been integrated into these efforts—providing mental wellness support, emotional counseling, and guidance to help individuals rediscover peace, balance, and purpose.
Because true recovery is not just about breaking habits, it’s about rebuilding lives.
Clearer Vision for Brighter Futures
In partnership with VisionSpring Foundation, the Trust launched a eyesight vision screening initiative across 130 Akal Academies in Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh—aiming to reach 70,000 students.
- In Phase 1 (Jan 2023), 9,000 students were screened and received glasses within 15 days
- In Phase 2 (April 2023), another 4,000 students screened
- 15,000+ students across 30 Akal Academies have benefitted so far
Teachers are trained for periodic screenings, and students are guided on maintaining healthy vision—because every child deserves to see the world clearly and chase their dreams confidently.
A Culture of Care for All
From those who teach to those who cook, clean, or cultivate the land—everyone is valued in the Kalgidhar Trust family.
Each role is respected. Every person is treated with kindness. Because healthcare is a human need—not a status symbol.
