A Trailblazer in the Canadian Navy
I am a SONAR Operator in the Canadian Navy and one of the first women qualified to serve on submarines. For the past 19 years, I have dedicated myself to my career, embracing both challenges and achievements.
Embracing Sikhism & Taking Amrit
Though I was born a ‘gori,’ I embraced Sikhism about six years ago and recently took Amrit. My journey of faith led me to Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi in Srinagar, Kashmir—my second home—where I formally committed to the path of Guru Nanak.
The Significance of the Dastar
For the past two years, I have been tying a dastar daily, inspired by a Singhni in my local sangat. The teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji resonate deeply with me—he promised to always stand by the Khalsa as long as we uphold our distinct identity. To me, the dastar is the most visible representation of that commitment.
Encouraging More Kaurs to Wear the Dastar
I wish more young Singhnis would consider wearing the dastar, but I’ve encountered resistance. Some believe women should be submissive and only wear chunnis to maintain femininity. However, I firmly believe that Sikh women are warriors, equal in strength and spirit.
Through my journey in the Navy and Sikhism, I hope to inspire more women to embrace their identity fearlessly and take pride in who they are.
