Meditation at Tapovan and Meeting Sant Ram Singh Ji
In 1894, Sant Attar Singh Ji arrived in Rawalpindi (now in Pakistan) and meditated at Tapovan for some time. Seeking a peaceful and secluded place for prolonged meditation, he met Sant Ram Singh Ji at Thamali. On Sant Ram Singh’s recommendation, a dense forest area called Kanohe di Jhangi, owned by Bhai Wazir Singh, was chosen as the meditation site.
Prolonged Meditation and Spiritual Discipline
At Kanoha, Sant Ji undertook three intense periods of meditation: first for 40 days, then for six months, and finally for one year. He spoke very little during these years, dedicating himself entirely to spiritual pursuits. Sustained by minimal food served once daily by the devoted couple Bhai Wazir Singh and Mai Bhag Bhari, Sant Ji’s body became frail due to his intense discipline.
Guidance to Mata Bholi and Spiritual Realization
During this time, Sant Ji’s mother, Mata Bholi, suffered from a painful abscess near her knee. Sant Ji comforted her, emphasizing the importance of tolerance and accepting God’s Will through devotion to the Divine Name. This spiritual guidance led Mata Bholi to achieve inner peace and spiritual enlightenment, enabling her to overcome her suffering and attain Jiwan Mukt (emancipation of the spirit in one’s lifetime). She passed away peacefully, blessed with divine realization.
Impact of Sant Ji’s Meditation on the Community
Sant Ji’s prolonged meditations, particularly the year-long one, garnered widespread attention, making Kanoha a center of spiritual attraction. Devotees from across the Rawalpindi district began flocking to the Phulahi grove at Kanoha to witness the sacred aura of Sant Ji. Continuous Gurbani Kirtan and Guru ka Langar uplifted the spiritual environment, further spreading Sant Ji’s fame.
Service to Humanity – Gurdwara Mastuana Sahib and Damdama Sahib
Before initiating the construction of Gurdwara Mastuana Sahib, Sant Ji renounced material wealth entirely. However, when Kar Sewa (service) for Gurdwara Mastuana Sahib and Gurdwara Damdama Sahib began, donations from devotees were utilized solely for the development of these sacred institutions and the welfare of mankind.
Sant Attar Singh Ji’s life at Kanoha exemplifies selfless devotion, spiritual discipline, and unwavering commitment to serving humanity. His legacy continues to inspire countless devotees.
