Punjabis in Power – Making an Impact in Britain
According to The Guardian and Operation Black Vote, out of 1,049 of the most powerful individuals in Britain, only 36 belong to ethnic minorities, with seven coming from Sikh backgrounds.
1. Sir Harpal S Kumar – Transforming Cancer Research
Sir Harpal S Kumar is the Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, one of the most prominent and successful charities in the UK. A Baker Scholar at Harvard Business School, he is also the Chair of the National Cancer Advisory Group and a key figure in cancer research transformation.
2. Jas Athwal – Leading Political Change
Jas Athwal is the leader of Redbridge Council, which turned Labour for the first time in 2014 under his leadership. He became the first council leader from a BAME background and has been actively involved in local governance since 2010.
3. Hardyal Singh Dhindsa – First BAME Police and Crime Commissioner
Hardyal Singh Dhindsa made history as the first BAME Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) in Derbyshire. A local politician since 1993, he has held multiple council positions in education, social care, planning, and highways. He also has over 30 years of experience as a probation officer.
4. Perminder Mann – A Trailblazer in Publishing
Perminder Mann is the CEO of Bonnier Publishing UK, one of the top publishing firms in Britain. Recognized as one of the most influential figures in the publishing industry, she co-founded Blink Publishing in 2014 and pioneered collaborations with social media influencers.
5. Daljit Lally – A Leader in Healthcare and Public Services
Daljit Lally is the CEO of Northumberland County Council and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. She was honored with an OBE in 2015 for her contributions to improving health and social care services in Northumberland.
6. Ranjit Banwait – A Political Pioneer
Ranjit Banwait made history as the first minority ethnic leader of Derby City Council in 2014. He has been actively involved in politics since 2006, representing the Boulton Ward.
7. Karamjit Singh – A Visionary in Healthcare and Justice
Karamjit Singh is the Chairman of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. He has contributed to free medical camps in India and has played an active role in electoral commissions and judicial administration. He was awarded a CBE in 1999 for his services.
