Pakistani Lawyer Fights to Prove Bhagat Singh’s Innocence After 86 Years

A Legal Battle to Prove Bhagat Singh’s Innocence

Eighty-six years after revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh was hanged for the murder of a British police officer, a Pakistani lawyer is striving to establish his innocence in the Lahore High Court.

Fresh Petition for a Retrial

Advocate Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi recently filed a fresh petition, urging an early hearing in the Lahore High Court. The court had earlier recommended a larger bench for the case in February last year, but no action has been taken yet.

Bhagat Singh – A Hero in India and Pakistan

Qureshi emphasizes that Bhagat Singh was not just a freedom fighter for India but is also regarded as a hero by many in Pakistan, especially in Lahore. Even Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, paid tribute to Singh twice.

Seeking Official Recognition for Bhagat Singh

In his petition, Qureshi has requested the Lahore High Court to overturn Singh’s sentence and has urged the government to honor him with a state award. He has also written to authorities, proposing a statue of Singh at Shadman Chowk, the site of his execution.

Unfair Trial and Fabricated Charges

Qureshi argues that Bhagat Singh was initially sentenced to life imprisonment but was later given the death penalty in another “fabricated case.” In 2014, Lahore police retrieved the original FIR from 1928, which did not mention Singh’s name, proving that he was convicted without substantial evidence.

Denial of Fair Trial

The tribunal that sentenced Bhagat Singh did not allow his lawyers to cross-examine 450 witnesses. Qureshi claims this was a clear violation of justice and is determined to prove Singh’s innocence in the Saunders case.

Awaiting Court’s Decision

Qureshi hopes for a hearing this month and remains committed to establishing that Bhagat Singh was wrongfully convicted.
