The Redemption of Sajjan – From Deception to Devotion

Guru Nanak’s Arrival at Tulamba

Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana reached the city of Tulamba in Multan, where they saw a grand and well-maintained inn. The inn was built by Sajjan, originally named Sheikh, to provide food and shelter to travelers regardless of their religion. He had constructed a temple for Hindus and a mosque for Muslims, creating an illusion of inclusivity and devotion.

The Hidden Face of Sajjan

Though he appeared as a saint during the day, Sajjan was far from virtuous. He secretly robbed and killed travelers, disposing of their bodies in a well. His seemingly noble hospitality was a disguise for his dark deeds.

Guru Nanak Unveils the Truth

Believing Guru Nanak to be wealthy, Sajjan welcomed him with great respect, offering him food and lodging. However, Guru Nanak, who could perceive hidden truths, saw through Sajjan’s deceit. Instead of sleeping, Guru Nanak began reciting a hymn filled with deep wisdom and spiritual truths.

The Power of Divine Hymns

As Guru Nanak sang, Sajjan realized that his sins were being exposed. The hymn compared deceitful people to polished bronze utensils that shine outwardly but remain dark within. It highlighted that true virtue comes not from appearances but from righteous actions.

Sajjan’s Transformation

Overcome with remorse, Sajjan fell at Guru Nanak’s feet and repented for his misdeeds. Under Guru Nanak’s guidance, he abandoned his sinful ways, distributed his wealth among the poor, and chose an honest path. He truly became a “Sajjan” – a virtuous and kind-hearted man.
