After an illustrious 35-year career in the Malaysian police force, Amar Singh Ishar Singh, Asia’s highest-ranking Sikh police officer, has retired, leaving behind a legacy that spans over 90 years and three generations of service. Amar Singh’s retirement as the Federal Commercial Crime Investigations Department (CCID) Director marks the end of a remarkable chapter in both his life and the history of the Malaysian police force.

A Passionate Career, Not Just a Job

Amar Singh’s reflections on his career reveal his deep passion for serving others:
“I did not work a single day in the police force. You work when you’re paid to do something. I did what I loved, and I got paid for it. That’s not work; that’s service.”

This mindset embodies the Punjabi spirit of dedication and love for service, which Amar Singh believes defines his approach to life.

A Legacy Rooted in Service

Amar Singh’s connection to the police force runs deep in his family. His grandfather, Bachan Singh, joined the Federated Malay States Police in the 1920s, serving in Kuala Kubu Baru, Kuala Lipis, and Raub. His father, Ishar Singh, followed in 1939 and became a pioneer member of the police jungle squad during the Malayan Emergency.

Amar Singh initially resisted the idea of joining the police force, but his perspective changed over time. Reflecting on his journey, he said:
“I didn’t want to be a policeman at first. But now, I can say I love the police force. My 35 years in service were beautiful, and we achieved great things together.”

A Community Celebration

Amar Singh’s farewell was marked by a gathering of over 300 Sikh policemen and community members at the Gurdwara Sahib Pulapol in Kuala Lumpur. The event highlighted his contributions and celebrated his inspiring journey.

Honoring a Trailblazer

Throughout his career, Amar Singh demonstrated exceptional leadership, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community. His retirement not only marks the end of an era but also serves as a testament to the power of dedication, passion, and service.

Final Thoughts

Amar Singh’s story is a beacon of inspiration, showcasing how one can transform a job into a lifelong mission of service. As he steps into retirement, his legacy continues to inspire future generations to serve with passion, commitment, and love.
