Blind Marathoner Amarjeet Chawla Achieves a Milestone – 101st Half-Marathon at Mumbai Marathon 2019

A Beacon of Inspiration – Defying the Odds

While many struggled to catch their breath after the Mumbai Marathon, Amarjeet Chawla stood out with his infectious energy and joyous spirit. At 63, and 100% blind, he not only completed the grueling 21-kilometer run but also achieved a remarkable milestone—finishing his 101st half-marathon.

The Journey of the Sporty Sikh

Fondly known as the Sporty Sikh, Amarjeet Chawla’s journey is one of resilience and determination. A Kandivali resident, Chawla lost his eyesight completely at the age of 40, though he had been battling low vision since childhood. Remarkably, he began running marathons at the age of 49, turning a challenge into an extraordinary passion.

“I ensured my blindness never held me back,” he shared, emphasizing his resolve to defy societal expectations.

Overcoming Challenges with Innovation

Running as a blind athlete comes with unique challenges, but Chawla found innovative ways to navigate them. Using a white cane as a “steering wheel,” he runs alongside an escort, both holding the cane for balance and guidance. This simple yet effective method allows him to run safely while maintaining his independence.

He remarked, “Even with the help of escorts, the white cane has been my constant companion. It has made all the difference.”

Record-Breaking Streak Across India

Over the years, Amarjeet Chawla has become a prominent name in India’s marathon community. With over 266 marathons under his belt, he has run across the length and breadth of the country—from Chandigarh to Chennai and Surat to Kolkata. His achievements are a testament to his unyielding spirit.

A Call for Support

At the Mumbai Marathon 2019, Chawla expressed his desire to aim even higher. “If I get good trainers and sponsors, my target is to complete 151 half-marathons,” he said with optimism.

On that memorable day, he was assisted by Rahul Brahme, who has partnered with him in over 30 marathons. Their camaraderie and teamwork are a shining example of mutual trust and dedication.

A Role Model for Resilience

Amarjeet Chawla’s journey inspires not just athletes but anyone facing life’s challenges. His story exemplifies that with determination and innovation, no obstacle is insurmountable. As he continues to break records and inspire others, his legacy grows as a beacon of hope and resilience.
