Sacred Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib – Where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Meditated for 26 Years

The Sacred Legacy of Baba Bakala Sahib

Nestled in the serene town of Baba Bakala, located in Amritsar district, stands the historic Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib. This sacred shrine holds immense significance for Sikhs as it marks the site where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji meditated in deep devotion for an extraordinary 26 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

The Prophecy of Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji

Before leaving this earthly realm, Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji cryptically uttered the words “Baba Bakale.” Sikhs interpreted this as a divine indication that the next Guru would be found in the town of Bakala near Amritsar. This prophecy set the stage for a profound discovery that would shape Sikh history.

The Story of Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana

During this time, a trader named Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana, a resident of Jhelum district, found himself in a perilous situation. While sailing with a ship loaded with goods, a sudden storm threatened to capsize his vessel. Desperate, he prayed to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, vowing to donate 500 dinars if his life and goods were spared.

Through divine grace, Makhan Shah’s ship safely reached its destination. Keeping his promise, he traveled to Baba Bakala to offer his donation. However, upon his arrival, he was confronted with a challenge—several impostors were falsely claiming to be the Guru.

The Moment of Revelation

To identify the true Guru, Makhan Shah devised a plan. He placed two dinars in front of each claimant, waiting to see who would acknowledge his promise. None did—until he approached Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.

Guru Sahib, with divine insight, reminded him of his unfulfilled vow and said, “Bhai Sahib, you had promised 500 dinars, but you are offering only two.” Overwhelmed by this revelation, Makhan Shah climbed to the rooftop and shouted joyfully, “Guru ladho re! Guru ladho re!” (The True Guru is found!).

Baba Bakala Sahib – A Symbol of Faith and Devotion

This momentous event solidified Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s position as the rightful Guru of the Sikhs. The phrase “Baba Bakale” became synonymous with the sacred town and its Gurdwara, which now stands as a testament to unwavering faith and spiritual perseverance.
