In a historic move, the Government of British Columbia, Canada, has officially declared July 1 as ‘Sant Teja Singh Day,’ recognizing the remarkable contributions of Sant Teja Singh Ji and the Sikh community. This announcement comes as a moment of immense pride for Sikhs worldwide.

A Visionary Advocate for Equality

A notification issued by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia highlights the enduring legacy of Sant Teja Singh Ji, a visionary leader and tireless advocate for equality. It acknowledges, “Since the late 19th century, Sikhs have significantly shaped the history and progress of British Columbia, often overcoming immense challenges. Sant Teja Singh Ji, a humanitarian, scholar, and dedicated servant of Sikh principles, devoted his life to combating inequality and building a just society.”

Early Life and Academic Journey

Born in 1877 in Balowali village, Gujranwala district (now Pakistan), Sant Teja Singh Ji pursued an exceptional academic journey, earning degrees from prestigious institutions like Harvard University. As the Principal of Khalsa College, Amritsar, he was inspired by Sant Attar Singh Ji Mastuana, who encouraged him to study abroad to elevate educational standards in India. Sant Teja Singh Ji became the first Sikh student to wear a turban at Cambridge and Harvard Universities, advocating for the cultural identity of Sikhs.

The First Ambassador of Sikhism to the West

Known as the ‘First Ambassador of Sikhism to the Western World,’ he worked tirelessly to address the challenges faced by Indians in America and Canada. He was instrumental in establishing Gurdwaras in Vancouver and other locations, fostering a sense of community among Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims. His efforts ensured that people of Indian origin could secure permanent residency in Canada, paving the way for their rights as Canadian citizens.

The Legacy of Sant Teja Singh Ji Lives On

Sant Teja Singh Ji also founded The Kalgidhar Trust at Baru Sahib in Himachal Pradesh under the guidance of Sant Attar Singh Ji. Today, the trust oversees two universities, 129 Akal Academies, and numerous social welfare initiatives, continuing his vision of education, social reform, and spiritual growth.
