From Darkness to Light – How Sewa Transformed My Life – Kulwinder Singh

Lost in Addiction and Struggle

Seven years ago, my life was spiraling out of control. I was dependent on alcohol, consumed meat regularly, and rarely stepped into the Gurdwara Sahib. My health deteriorated, my family suffered, and even my parents in India were deeply worried. I felt lost, with no direction or purpose.

A Chance Encounter with Sewa

One Thursday evening, at my lowest point, I went to meet someone at the Gurdwara Sahib. He was running late, and while waiting, I wandered into the kitchen for a cup of tea. Seeing the Sangat engaged in kitchen sewa, I was invited to help. That small moment of service changed everything—I felt a sense of belonging and kept returning week after week to serve in the kitchen.

A Journey of Transformation

From kitchen sewa, I moved on to helping with parshad sewa. Slowly, with the Guru’s grace and the support of the Sangat, I made the decision to grow my hair, quit drinking, and embrace a vegetarian lifestyle. My journey of self-discovery led me closer to my faith.

A Life Dedicated to Sikhi

By the end of that year, I took Amrit, fully committing myself to Sikhi. Today, I read Bhog De Salok with the Granthi Singhs every Sunday and actively participate in Arthi and Artha. After seven years of unwavering faith and dedication, I am now honored to serve as the President of Guru Nanak Gurdwara South Birmingham Sparkhill.

Sewa changed my life—what started as a simple act of service turned into a journey of spiritual awakening and transformation.
