A Dream Come True for Leicester’s Sikh Community
“The opening of Leicester’s first Sikh free school is a dream come true,” said Inderjit Singh Panesar, chair of trustees behind Falcons Primary School.
Delayed Opening Due to Funding Withdrawal
Located on Gipsy Lane, Falcons Primary was initially set to open in September. However, a last-minute funding withdrawal by the Department for Education (DfE) delayed the process, sparking frustration among parents.
Support from Leaders Paves the Way
Thanks to the efforts of Leicester East MP Keith Vaz, Councillor Vi Dempster, and the DfE, the school finally opened its doors after trustees met strict conditions, including restructuring the board and securing a sustainable financial plan.
Inclusive Education with a Sikh Ethos
Falcons Primary will provide high-quality education rooted in Sikh values, welcoming students from all backgrounds. At least 50% of the admissions are open to non-Sikh children.
Exciting Future for Students
Headteacher Jasbir Mann expressed excitement, stating: “The historic Grade II listed building has been completely renovated, creating a calm and peaceful learning environment. We’re looking forward to implementing a new curriculum and after-school activities.”
Strong Foundations for a Bright Future
MP Keith Vaz emphasized that while the journey was challenging, ensuring firm foundations for the school was crucial. He praised the collaborative efforts that led to this remarkable achievement.
