Religious Diversity Journeys: Middle Schoolers Explore Sikhism in Detroit Gurdwaras

Fostering Religious Awareness in Middle Schoolers

As part of the Religious Diversity Journeys program, 7th-grade students in the Detroit metro area visited local Gurdwaras to deepen their understanding of Sikhism. This interfaith initiative aims to prepare young minds for life in a culturally diverse society, promoting mutual respect and awareness of various faiths.

A Unique Program Led by Visionaries

Run by the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, Religious Diversity Journeys is a flagship initiative designed to bring middle schoolers closer to different religious traditions. Raman Kaur Singh, President of the Interfaith Council, emphasized the program’s role in fostering harmony, stating, “Our shared values drive us to create a community that lives together peacefully.”

A Hands-On Learning Experience at Detroit Gurdwaras

This year, Gurdwaras in Detroit and surrounding areas hosted over 600 students, aged approximately 14, along with parents and teachers. A notable visit was to Mata Tripta Ji Gurdwara Sahib, where the day began with breakfast followed by an interactive overview of Sikhism in the Diwan Hall.

Interactive Breakout Sessions for Holistic Learning

Students participated in four breakout sessions, each designed to highlight different aspects of Sikh culture:

  • Dastaar and the 5Ks: Students learned about the Sikh identity, and some even had turbans tied for them.
  • Service Projects: Hands-on activities emphasized the importance of Seva (selfless service).
  • The Gurdwara: Insights were shared about the spiritual and communal role of Gurdwaras.
  • Gatka: Students explored the Sikh martial art, a symbol of discipline and defense.

The Langar Experience: A Lesson in Equality and Service

An overview of the Langar tradition was presented, followed by a communal meal. Students actively contributed to the preparation of Langar, reinforcing the values of equality and humility. A Q&A session concluded the event, allowing students to clarify their understanding of Sikhism.

Expanding the Program to Other Communities

Similar programs were held at Singh Sabha of Michigan Gurdwara in Canton and Rochester Gurdwara Sahib. As hate crimes rise nationwide, such initiatives inspire the Sikh community to collaborate with schools and interfaith organizations to establish similar programs across the U.S.

The Religious Diversity Journeys program serves as a powerful tool for cultivating understanding, respect, and unity among young minds, creating a foundation for a more harmonious and inclusive future.
