A Curious Question Under the Evening Sky
The golden hues of the setting sun bathed the small porch in a warm glow. Amrit sat cross-legged on the wooden steps, his pencil dancing across the pages of his sketchbook. The evening breeze carried the scent of fresh earth, and the rustling trees whispered soft melodies.
His father, Jaswant Singh, stepped onto the porch, wiping the sweat from his brow after a long day of work. He let out a content sigh as he sat beside Amrit, glancing at his son’s drawing.
“Papa,” Amrit asked, pausing mid-sketch, “why did you give some of your earnings to that school project today? Don’t we need that money for our house?”
Jaswant looked at his son, his eyes filled with warmth. He patted the space beside him. “Come here, beta,” he said gently. Amrit scooted closer, curiosity gleaming in his eyes.
A Father’s Lesson in Giving
“Tell me, Amrit,” Jaswant began, “do you feel happy when you learn something new at school? Or when you run around with your friends, feeling strong and healthy?”
Amrit grinned. “Yes, Papa! I love reading stories and playing cricket with my friends!”
Jaswant nodded. “Now imagine there are children who don’t have a school to go to. No books, no playground, no teacher to guide them. Some don’t even have a doctor to help them when they are sick.” He paused, watching Amrit’s expression change.
“Today, I gave a part of what I earned to help build a school for them. Just thinking about those children learning, playing, and growing brings me joy. That, my son, is the beauty of giving.”
Amrit frowned slightly, deep in thought. “But Papa, what about us? Don’t we need things too?”
The Sikh Way – Sharing to Grow
Jaswant smiled, understanding his son’s concern. “We do, beta, but Waheguru has blessed us with enough. In Sikhi, we have a beautiful tradition called Daswandh—we set aside a portion of what we earn for those who need it more.”
Amrit listened intently as his father continued. “Sikhi teaches us three important values:
- Kirat Karo – Work hard and earn honestly.
- Naam Japo – Remember Waheguru and stay connected to Him.
- Vand Chako – Share what we have with others.
We don’t lose when we give, Amrit. Instead, we grow happiness together.”
Happiness That Multiplies
A slow smile spread across Amrit’s face. “So, when we share, we help others and feel happy ourselves?”
“Exactly,” Jaswant said, resting a gentle hand on his son’s shoulder. “Today, I felt peace knowing that somewhere, a child will read their first book because of us. That’s the power of Vand Chako—happiness that spreads.”
Amrit’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Papa, next time, I’ll save my pocket money to help too!”
Jaswant pulled him into a proud embrace. “That’s my boy. Let’s keep sharing and making the world a better place.”
